Whether you grew up as a Disney vacation kid or you started the tradition later with your own family, you know how Disney vacations can become addicting. Sometimes it only takes one trip to the parks to get hooked into the magic of all that Disney has to offer. There is no denying that this particular addiction can get very expensive very quickly.

Disney is magical, but that magic comes at a price. If you are a Disney vacation addict, you may have considered a Disney Vacation Club (DVC) membership, but were unsure if making a long-term commitment and large investment was the right way to go.

Fortunately, there is a great way for you to save money on frequent trips without becoming a DVC member. Renting DVC points can provide huge cost savings at deluxe Disney resorts. While you won’t enjoy all the benefits of DVC membership, you’ll get a more magical and luxurious trip at a big cost advantage. Saving on accommodations can allow you to reallocate your vacation funds for more experiences you might not otherwise be able to afford.

How Does Renting Points Work?

Disney Vacation Club members have bought into a timeshare, but instead of having a specific vacation window each year, they are given points which they can then use to book accommodations at select Disney Deluxe Resorts. Points have a 2 year life span. You can also borrow points from the upcoming year, giving members the ability to use 3 years of points on a single reservation. That being said, some members will have a surplus of points if they don’t use them regularly. If that member doesn’t think they can or will use all their points, they can “rent” their points to non-members.

Although you can do this directly from the DVC member, it’s recommended to both the owner and renter to go through a rental service to help broker the arrangement. As the renter, you will pay the owner a dollar amount per point in order to book using their DVC membership.

A rental service can help facilitate all the arrangements to make sure both the member and renter are protected, but once the booking is confirmed, the renter will get to enjoy a DVC stay at a huge savings.

The price per point varies, as does the number of points you need to book a stay, but generally points are significantly cheaper to rent, and a rental service can let you know how many you’ll need to use based on the length of your stay and the resort you’d like to stay in.

Renting Points Saves Money

This is the biggest draw for most Disney addicts. Cost savings means more frequent,  longer trips. When you book with rented points, your resort accommodations can cost significantly less than if you book directly through Disney.

Depending on which resort you choose, you can save well over 50% on a deluxe room. Renting DVC points is a huge advantage to families because they can stay in accommodations that have additional convenient amenities. It’s great to have a separate room for little ones, a laundry, and having a kitchen in your room will save time and money on dining. Your room will also be close enough to the parks to take a break if you need one.

You Have Close Theme-Park Access using DVC Points

There is a definite hierarchy to Disney properties, and those at the top of the rankings are not only the most expensive, but can be the most difficult for vacationers to book. Many of these resorts are not only closer to the parks, but offer options such as the monorail, boat service, and other more convenient transportation options.

Are Some Member Perks Non-Transferrable?

It’s important to know that you do not become a member when you rent points. You’ll get the DVC experience at your resort, but without a membership of your own, so you don’t get the full experience of membership. This includes dining and shopping discounts (usually about 10-20%), access to the members only lounges, and access to member only events and parties.

However, because many of the best Disney resorts offer perks to all their resort guests, those who are renting points can still take advantage of staying at these luxury properties that wouldn’t have been financially accessible to them otherwise. One membership perk that does transfer when renting points is parking. Currently, you do not pay for parking when staying on a member’s points.
